SNES emulation: accuracy versus speed

Every SNES emulator makes a trade. Run the hardware exactly and you need a lot of computer. Take shortcuts and it runs on a phone, until a game relies on a behaviour the shortcut skipped.

Two philosophies

ZSNES, written largely in x86 assembly, defined the late 1990s: fast on the PCs of the day, loose with the details. Snes9x took the long road of compatibility and speed, and still runs almost everywhere.

bsnes, by the developer known as byuu and later Near, went the other way: reproduce the hardware timing as exactly as possible and let the games sort themselves out. It needs far more CPU, and it fixed bugs players had come to accept as normal.

Why timing matters

Games written for fixed hardware lean on exact timing. A raster effect expects the CPU to reach a line of code at a known moment; a fast, approximate emulator gets there early and the screen tears or the music drifts.

Enhancement chips add to the problem. A cartridge with a Super FX or SA-1 chip is a second computer the emulator must also reproduce.

Choosing one

What you could build here

Three directions that would work on this name. None of them is the only answer — it is your name once it is yours.

  1. An emulator guide. Which emulator, which settings, which shader, on which device. Newcomers search this exact phrase.
  2. A compatibility database. Game by game, emulator by emulator: what runs, what glitches, what needs a patch.
  3. A handheld review site. Cheap emulation handhelds sell in their millions and buyers want honest reviews.
